I've had so much fun participating in Sew Mama Sew's giveaway day in the past, both as a giver-away and as a winner, so I'm excited to participate again this time!

I've made patchwork, counted cross-stitch, rubber stamped on porcelain disks, felt applique, raffia on plastic canvas, needlepoint.....ie. I really like hand-made ornaments! ;-)

ReplyDeleteThis very week I am going to a friends house to try ornament making with small children (sounds tricky!). I am going to bake salt dough stars and somehow work out how to get a hole in the top for thread to hang on the tree. Then the kids can decorate with paint, glitter etc. Might be a bit rustic / childish for your co-worker!

ReplyDeleteWhen my son was little we made all the standards ~ clothespin reindeer, painted forms, every kind of pipe-cleaner and glittered mess out there. This year I'm making a gift set of Advent Calendar ornaments for my sister and her family. Now that they have their own little one (and hopefully more in the future) I'm hoping this will be a treasured tradition for them.

ReplyDeleteI made small quilted snowflakes last year accented with metalic silver thread. They seemed to be a hit. Wish I had a tutorial to share. This year, I'm just making little cardstock monogram ornaments on my Cricut.

ReplyDeleteI've done a bit of every type of handmade ornament, cross stitch, tatting, crochet, beading. My mom made a super cute reindeer head with a cork from a wine bottle!
ReplyDeleteFor my Christmas craft night this year, we did an old-fashioned ornament- you take a foam ball, then use a punch to make about 75 snowflakes or flowers out of the colors of your choice. Then you take a 5mm sequin and use a metal pin to pin through the center of the sequin and the punched shape. Do this all over the ball. My guest came up with some really pretty designs! Metallic scrapbook paper makes these extra shiny.

My favorite handmade ornament when i was little were little snowmen. I don`t remember making them but they were definitely handmade. I think they used the tops of oldfashined clothes pins.

ReplyDeleteI've been scheming for awhile to make a bunch of bird ornaments and put them on painted branches as a general decoration (where the birds could be swapped out for more seasonal decorations when I want variety). I just finally set up a sewing room so I'm not working on the dining room table. So maybe it's time to start that project.
This year we made foot prints and hand prints of our daughters out of salt dough.
ReplyDeleteI recently came across an ornament that I'd love to recreate - it was a round "ball" style ornament and was covered in layered strips of fabric... I think it would be so fun to create an ornament like this using fabrics from projects I have made (ex: using scraps from my daughter's birthday dress to create a commemorative ornament for her). I plan to try it out using scrap fabric, a large plastic ornament, and modge podge! :)

ReplyDeleteMy favorite handmade ornaments are tiny paua shells with little thread loops. I guess they are probably more natural than handmade though. I can't take much credit for a thread loop :)

ReplyDeleteIt's not necessarily an ornament, but a decoration: cloth 'paper' chains. Basically stiffened paper, Velcro dots = reusable fantastic decorations !

The only ornament I have ever made was a very sad looking angel. I believe it was made out of paper plates and decorated with cotton balls for the hair and glitter glue for the rest of the face requirements. It was a good project for a 4 year old, but maybe not for your coworker!

I just had a Christmas craft party and we made some ornaments from pintrest. My favorites were glass ornaments that we etched with etching cream. It was so fun!

ReplyDeleteI've made felt snowflakes, stockings and mittens. Also cinnamon ornaments and glass ball ornaments that we squeezed paint into and swirled around. My fav is a button snowflake ornament that I made from wire and buttons.

I've actually haven't made any homemade ornaments since I was a child, but I've seen some great ones on the internet that look like cupcakes (basic ball ornament glued into a cupcake liners with fake snow on top and beads for sprinkles). Might have to experiment with that this weekend!

ReplyDeleteFelt is the best ornament maker it is so nice to work with and you can build it over a base..I've made pincushion style ornaments embroidery and trims to embellish, small three dimensional animals houses even insects..I made a ladybird recently, and then there are flowers and even wreaths...It is fun stuff!

ReplyDeleteClear glass ornaments (from Michaels or Joanns) and rub on designs (that they also sell). You may also put some artificial snow or strands of tinsel inside the ornaments. I like the ones with birds or snowmen!

I've made some crochet snowmen, some pine cone elves(really liked this one!), snowmen made out of clothes pins and little ice skaters made from felt and pipe cleaners(these came out cute too!). I know I'm forgetting some. I'm still working on some embroidered and quilted ornaments. Who knows, maybe those will be for next year!
